It can sometimes be tricky to get Excel to work with Macros and your own computer. We have listed a few of the most likely issues you may encounter in this FAQ.
The way that macros run on Windows and Mac are different. Before Excel for Mac 2016, VBA was non-existent and even now it is not as powerful as it is on its Windows counterpart. We have been unable to get the Upgrade Macro to work on the latest versions of Excel for Mac.
No! The way the upgrade to PRO macro works is it removes the restrictions on your existing Lite version. It does not touch any of your data. We always recommend that you make a backup of your file first, just in case of issues when the macro opens and closes it.
A backup of your file is created in a backup directory, so there should always be a copy available, but it is good practice for you to make your own backup first.
It may be because of the way your computer is setup to handle Excel macros. Unfortunately a lot of macros are sent via email and are malicious and Excel by default will not run them unless you give permission for it to do so.
Please check your macro settings and permissions.
You can also check Microsoft's advice on how to Enable or disable macros in Office files.
If you are able to start the upgrade but it doesn't complete, please check to see what error messages you are getting from Excel.
Is Excel already open, especially for the file you are trying to upgrade? If it is, it will not work as the file is already open.
Also look at the log that the Upgrade file itself creates as that might tell you what the problem is. Check on the Upgrade log summary worksheet on the Upgrade to PRO.xlsm file and that might provide further information as to what the problem is.
We are not able to support running the actual macro on your computer, as your computer setup is not something we can change.
However, for PRO customers, we can upgrade a small number of files for you if you raise a Support Request. Please note that in order to upgrade the file, you would need to overtype or delete confidential information before sending the original file to us. After the upgrade, you would need to enter this information back in yourself.
